Documentaries watched:

I went on a small documentary binge watch at the begining of the project mostly about science to look at conciousness and the possibilities behind it. Some werent related at all to my plans but were still applicable to widen my knowledge, and it makes for good background noise for knitting.

Books read:

I'm a massive reader, but mostly fiction. So to understand and inspire some thoughts over the conciousness I went and read some non fiction which was very insightful. The Chaos Walking series really made me think about automatic art and uninhibited creation, as everyone can hear eachothers thoughts all the time. (a little harder to knit with)

Artists researched:

A range of artists who have had varying degrees of influence or inspiration over my work. "bad artists", automatic artists and some left field ones with no relevance other than the fact that I like them.

phillip guston

to kick off my initial research into my newly written idea brief, guston strikes as a good place to start. messy aesthetics and i love a consistent colour pallete, might grab myself a motif

noel fielding

he deals with too much pop culture for me, but his application of media and messy aesthetic have given me further inspiration to look for other artists to gel together. fucking weird things tho, but almost too weird to where it seems a tad forced, i like his gallery though.

joseph kosuth

bam what a classic, i just like the conceptual nature behind this piece. i will manifest my brain to be as smart. but it probably wont happen. too monochrome for me to actually enjoy, have some fun with your stuff, guy

joan miro

i found out yesterday that this is not a woman, but a spanish man which changes my perception of the work entirely. my first actual automatic artist ive looked at, not as chaotic as i imagined but i love a good sketchy thing

jay rechsteiner

absolute favourite artist at the moment, bad art and text? a girls dream come true. his website took hours to go through but you bet i did all of it, its meaningful but funny but weird but bad but good. cant really describe it. i will absorb his energy and make it my new personality until i find someone else i like

janice lowry

her journalling work is interesting to me, especially since i aim to make journal recordings of certain thoughts or feelings and getting the visual appeal to sit with the content is something i could look at from lowry. i also enjoy the subtle collage and colours she uses, its still subtle and effective. her website is worth checking out

jack whitten

whitten doesnt normally work in this way, but i cherrypicked some of his work to reflect my own. mass blocks of messy text works for me. i also like the way the text is seperated andnot in a chunk like i normally work with, something to take forward into the future

hattie malcomson

she was recomended to me as a research point a little time ago and found she was a former student. although slightly thematically off for me, visually i accept that the application of paint is similar or of use. i also enjoy the plain ish backgrounds to focus on the subject and colour palette.

ghoulorama

new favourite artist. his mixture of comedy and absurdism is absolutely great for me. he exibits at the dont walk gallery sometimes which is drawing me there, i also like his slight lack of portraiture as that market is saturated, its hard to find an inspiration like that for my work

esser gunduz

basquiat but not? wonderful, that name is overused and too popular anyway. it relates to my automatism kick and my interest in weird shit. especially the one that goes onto the frame, i like that. i dont want to make art like this though, just nice to look at, unlike me

ellsworth kelly

eh

andre masson

now we are getting into some weird surrealism shiz.  i prefer his drawings to the paintings, sometimes theyre just a bit too much i think they would look better huge and less cramped. but i should let go and see how abstracted i can take my practice

albert oehlen

a fan favourite and classic 'bad' artist. his work is huge and i cant wait to see some of it in person soon. i hate minimalism so this really works for me, huge explosions of colour is always the way to go. i should let go like this sometimes.

galleries / exhibitions:

honestly at this point i dont want to go visit my family, or eat at restaurants anymore, miss corona took away my galleries and im pissed off. Imagine all the fun bad art i could look at. however, i have found some old ones or online ones to fill the ever-growing void.

dont walk gallery

based in kent, this punk aesthetic gallery houses artists like noel fielding and ghoulorama who i am thouroughly influenced by. the punk attitude and range of shows makes it something very special for me. the wide range of media involved in the rotation of shows is pretty darn cool if you ask me. i will be making sure to keep stalk them and visit the gallery when everything actually opens again.

Tracey Emin / Edvard Munch: The Loneliness of the Soul

this exhibition starts on the 18th of may and i think everyone is very interested in, or at least my nerdy art friends and i. alot of my text inspiration comes from Emin so to -possibly- see her work in the flesh again makes me forget about this "wonderful and definitely not stressful" FMP project. this exhbition is at the royal academy and deals with some weird stuff about the soul

Arshile Gorky & Jack Whitten

god i hated looking into this. their website is absolutely garbo. although i do love a bit of jack whitten, this is unforgivable. an online exhibition for these two artists doesnt even really make sense for me. it goes live on the 20th of may. these two artists are said to have been the influence over 'he who shall not be named' (for those who don't know, jackson pollock) but i will be looking at the whole exhibition on the 20th

Museum of Bad Art

ah what a comforting gallery, to assure you no matter how bad your art is, it can always be exhibitied anywhere. i especially love the bad portraits section, theres something about wrong anatomy that is very fun to 'fix'? i dont think thats the right explanation for it. this gallery is based in the US so there isnt much chance of me visiting, however i am perfectly content browsing their -hilarious- online collection.

Outsider Art Gallery

an off branch from the dont walk gallery, and it seems more like a small permanant exhibition space. alot of different media, beneficial to my practice for mixed media ideas. i was thinking about doing something with yarn. i love the abstracted forms yet tying to realism somehow. slap some text on there and ill be all over that like ants on strawberry jam

The Sky was Blue the Sea was Blue and the Boy was Blue

this is a huge group exhibition with the main theme being blue? it does have greyson perry in it, which was initially how i found it. but also through looking through it i found an artist called flora yukhnovich. they have an actual interactive online gallery space which gives the art a sense of scale and space, it really adds a lot. although not usually my thing, i had a lot of fun with this one.

media journal - ish:

all the leftovers, mostly interesting articles or movies that don't relate at all, but i thought were pretty neat. just to build up background knowledge or other art practice stuff. basically just a list of what i looked at through the whole project
