Books Read:
The Face of Britain by Simon Schama (23/12/20)
- Reread of an old favourite to get me back in the swing of portraiture after the last rather abstract project. Great insight to the history of portraits and their role in Britain.
Chroma by Derek Jarman (27/12/20)
- Probably one of my new favourite art books, the colourful text talks about art as text. The collection of poetry and the pace of it really gives insight. I hope to use text to further my knowledge of art. Perhaps to use text/poetry for my project.
Permenant Red by John Berger (29/12/20)
- Berger writes well, I have enjoyed a few of his books. The struggle of artists is real and the way Berger explores this with the essays is interesting, though I disagree with a few of his main points.
A Barthes Reader by Susan Sontang (3/1/21)
- Long old book. Only read about half before I couldnt tolerate it anymore. It comes with an air of pomposity that I just cant stand, as it held almost zero relation to my current work I decided not to finish. Though I might pick it up later when I have more time to read non related work.
Art Talk by Jeanne Siegel (8/1/21)
- A collection of essays from varying artists. I particularly liked the discussion of political art between the editior and Leon Golub. 'To take on the system, you need subject matters of stress. It cant be done through abstract nodes.' I thought this was poignant, but less relevant to current work. Perhaps I could lead into something politics based, it is the right era for it.
Meditations on a Hobby Horse by E.H.Gombrich (12/1/21)
- Art theory is always a long read, but a useful insight into how I can apply myself to art. Not too relevant to current project. Will keep in mind for FMP.
